Barn

Kruisem, Zingem 240 m² gross

A farm barn in the Scheldt valley is being joined to the farmhouse. The change of use needed advice from the Flemish agriculture administration; the roof timbers stay.

The house was narrow and dark in the middle. The stair ran across it and cut the ground floor in two. We moved it to the party wall, so the living space now runs in one piece from the street to the garden.

At the back, a low extension holds the kitchen, with a rooflight across the full width. The street front stayed as it was, apart from a new coat of limewash. The city asked for one change: the extension's roof edge 30 cm lower on the neighbours' side.

Barn, Kruisem

The barn as we found it: brick walls, corrugated sheets on the roof, a collapsed lean-to and a stack of roof tiles
01Outside, as found. The corrugated sheets have been replaced with tiles.
A dark loft with timber beams and a round window in the brick gable wall
02The loft and its round window, kept.
A timber post on the dusty loft floor, with brick walls behind
03A post of the roof structure, kept.

A farm barn in Zingem, with an oak roof structure still in good order. The barn is being joined to the existing farmhouse, for a larger living room and two bedrooms. The council granted the permit after advice from the Flemish agriculture administration. The roof covering has been replaced; the timbers stayed where they were and now sit inside, above the living space. The photos show the barn as we found it.

The interior finishes are under way. Handover is planned for December.

The studio

Two architects and a draughtswoman, on the first floor of a house in Ghent. We take on a limited number of projects a year, so the same people follow a project from the first meeting to handover.

Study model, card, 1:100
  1. Measure first

We measure the house ourselves and look up the old plans in the city archive. That way we know what is there before we draw anything.

  2. Drawing to scale

Sketches are made in plan and section, often with a card model beside them. That way you can judge the space before anything is built.

  3. The permit

We put the application together, submit it through the Omgevingsloket and answer the council's questions.

  4. On site

We ask three contractors for prices, visit the site every week and draw up the snag list at handover.
